Hiking boots have their respective advantages and disadvantages. This topic is feverishly debated over as to whether hiking boots, shoes, or even trail runners are best for your hiking excursions. It is important to note that even within each of these three categories there are a wide array of variations. For example, hiking boots fall into the subcategories of day hiking, backpacking, and even low rise( Some people will simply just call these hiking shoes). In this article I will review some of the advantages and disadvantages I have found in regards to hiking boots.

  • There is generally more protection on the toe and heel of the shoe

  • Better support, although there is some dispute regarding this fact

  • Solid traction from deeper lugs

  • Keeps out more rocks, sand and other loose debris

  • Can provide protection against the elements depending on waterproof rating and the level of insulation provided

In general, hiking boots will last up to 500 miles of treading. Of course, timing will vary in accordance with your proclivity to hiking.  

Boots are generally more rugged than shoes and trail runners while offering more optionality in the way of protection. Hiking boots will cover your ankles and provide a feeling of support.  Although, many argue that hiking boots, in reality, do not offer additional support when compared to other hiking shoe options.


Boots can also offer insulated and waterproof variations that provide an extra level of protection against inclement weather and harsh terrain.

The Disadvantages Of Hiking Boots Are:

  • Boots are heavier than hiking shoes

  • More stiff and rigid

  • Requires a longer break-in period when compared to shoes

  • Typically not very breathable

  • Can be more expensive than hiking shoes or trail runners

It is important to consider the weight of your trail shoes. When hiking long treks you will absolutely notice the weight of your shoes. If you believe that hiking boots do not offer an incremental improvement when compared to hiking shoes, as outlined in this article, then go with hiking shoes or trail runners. Boots are stiff, rigid, and require a break in period. This can make the boots very uncomfortable the first few times you wear them. Additionally, hiking boots are generally not breathable and usually cost more than traditional hiking shoes or trail runners.

Conclusion

If you are not concerned about support, or believe that hiking boots do not offer additional support when compared to shoes then I would stick with a shoe or trail runner. However, if you want something that will protect your feet from the cold wet conditions then a hiking boot may be the option for you.  Ultimately, you will have to determine what is important to you and what kind of terrain you generally negotiate. Plenty of people have both hiking boots and shoes and will alternate depending on the hike mileage, terrain, and the weather.
